Mémé Amani - (2024)

Mémé - Grandmother - (French)  /  Amani - Peace (Swahili)

I hear the distant drums, steady and deep, echoing the heartbeat of lands we left behind. Ancestors cry out, voices rising in longing, searching for home. But home is no more, and we are here, in a place that asks us to be new, to find ways to live without leaving our past.

We yearn for what was, for the comfort of familiar soil, yet find ourselves shaping new traditions, seeking softer ways to be present here. The fabrics in my hands, vibrant and alive, carry stories of our past. My fingers move with the care of those who came before, each stitch a memory, each thread a heartbeat. These are the hands and heart of my people, stitching tighter, holding close the whispers of those who dreamed of return but walked forward.

Here, then, is my offering: a tapestry of resilience and remembrance, woven from the threads of where we’ve been and where we stand. It is our past, our present, held together, bridging what was with what will be - JUNNY

VISIBLE / IN VISIBLE

"An exploration of presence, identity and resilience." - JUNNY Hibbert

This body of work delves into the intricate interplay between what is seen and unseen, heard and unheard. Through sculptural forms and mixed media, Visible /Invisible captures the challenges and triumphs of Black women, balancing the visible strength of cultural pride with the often invisible emotional labor and struggles. Each piece evokes a dialogue between history and modernity, tradition and progress, unity and individuality.

Artist Statement: This sculpture is part of a series of fabric and foam heads that I am creating that explore the themes of race, gender, and identity. I am interested in using these heads to represent the different facets of my own identity as a black woman. I am also interested in exploring the ways in which African textiles and symbols can be used to represent strength, power, and beauty.
